Masks the photograph offers

Create masks from detected subjects, people, sky and foreground objects in Develop.

Click ＋ in Layers to see detected-mask thumbnails above the manual tools. The list shows Subject, Background, each Person, Sky when detected, and individual foreground objects when several are found. Click a thumbnail to create a named layer.

Detection takes about half a second. The popover shows finding things… while working and nothing detected when no result is available. Manual tools remain accessible.

Object names. Frames can label dog, cat, bird, horse, flower, tree, plant, car, truck, bus, bicycle, motorcycle and boat. Repeated names get numbers; uncertain results use Object 1, Object 2 and so on. Isolated objects can classify less confidently than the full photograph. Names affect only the layer label and can be changed without changing the mask.

When several objects share a category, a group row such as Animals creates one layer containing them all.

Sky. Detection starts from bright, pale or blue areas near the upper edge outside the subject. Results must cover enough of the frame and top edge. A bright ceiling can be mistaken for sky. Sky uses a Select mask, so click its chip to correct it with Select refinements.

Select on the photograph. Press M and hover to highlight detected masks with their names. Click to create a layer. At overlaps, the smaller mask takes priority; the wider one remains in ＋. Background is excluded from hover selection.

Dragging still draws with the active tool, even over a highlighted object. Existing shape handles take priority over object selection.

Detection status. A layer badge reports Nothing detected here now, This detection could not be made or Re-detected at a newer model. A The Select model is not on this Mac badge can be clicked to download the model, with progress in the activity queue. When the download finishes, the current mask is tried again without needing to change its shape or adjustments.

When detection runs. Opening ＋ or activating a mask tool starts the survey using the decoded photograph. Merely opening Develop or browsing photographs does not. Both triggers share results, and hover uses the cached result.

Results are cached for the session and on disk. Clear Detected masks in Storage to rebuild them. Disabled detected components skip detection during rendering.

Detected masks store the request, identifying point and model revision. They can be regenerated at export size, after clearing the cache or on another Mac. Copying one to another photograph detects that photograph’s subject.
