Chapter 06 · Masking
6.8Seeing the mask
Press V to cycle the selected mask through hidden, tint, zebra and black-and-white matte views.
Use tint to position a mask, zebra to distinguish its shape from the photograph and matte to inspect soft edges. Overlays remain available when the layer’s eye is off.
The Layers header menu selects Hide overlay, Tint, Zebra or Matte directly. It appears when a layer is selected. Tint and zebra use the layer colour; zebra stripes stay the same screen width at every zoom. All overlays follow crop and straighten.
Repairs. V also shows a selected repair’s region, or all spots in a selected dust map. Selecting a layer returns overlay control to it.
Inspect at zoom. Overlays, pins and hover highlights follow the zoomed canvas. Drawing tools still operate at fit.
Shape chips. Each component shows its type, add or subtract mode, eye and hover delete control. Click a Radial or Linear chip for handles, or a Select chip to resume refining its mask, including one saved in an earlier session.
Drag a chip by its name to reorder components. Order matters when add and subtract shapes overlap: moving an addition after a subtraction can fill an area previously removed. Moving two additions or two subtractions past each other makes no difference.
Rendering. Loupe and Develop use the same masked recipe.
