The pointer, and the help overlay

Press ? or choose Help › Help Overlay in the photograph window to show keyboard shortcuts and pointer gestures over that window. The menu item is checked while the overlay is open; select it again, press ? or press esc to close the overlay. Getting Started introduces this alongside its task list.

Help adapts to the mode, view and active canvas tool. It dims interface controls while leaving the photograph at normal brightness. Shortcuts continue working, and the pressed key highlights.

Keys for visible controls appear beside them, and each such control is outlined so its keys and notes can be traced back to it. The mode and view capsules in the toolbar print their keys beside their own segments. Other photograph shortcuts appear along the bottom. Gesture notes explain actions such as double-click to reset, drag to reorder and right-click to rename. Canvas gestures appear in a lower-left panel. The current mode and Choose phase are identified.

When a canvas tool replaces zoom or pan gestures, help shows the tool’s actions. Notes follow controls when the layout changes and are arranged to avoid overlaps.

The overlay uses consistent gesture names: click, Shift-click, Command-click, Option-click, double-click, drag, Command-drag, right-click, type, scroll and pinch. Its shortcut and control definitions are checked together, though an undeclared control cannot be identified by that check.

Show Keystrokes. Enable this in the View menu to display the last three actions in the lower-left of the photograph, useful for recordings. Each shows the key, action and affected count when relevant. Filenames are omitted. There is no shortcut for enabling it.
