Presenting

Present fills the screen with one photograph at a time, so you can show a shoot to a customer across the table or a holiday to the family. Press ⌘4 in Browse, or the fourth segment of the view control.

What is shown is what Browse is showing: the collection you have selected, narrowed by whatever you have narrowed it with, in the order you have sorted it, each photograph under its current treatment. A folded set shows its cover and nothing else, which is how a run of near-identical frames becomes one photograph in a show. A rating filter is how a family album leaves out the misses.

Frames renders every photograph before the show opens, at the size of the display it will fill, so nothing stutters once it starts. Where some of the originals are not on this machine, a sheet says how many have to be downloaded and roughly how much that is, and offers you Prepare, which fetches and renders and then opens, or Present now, which opens immediately and shows the smaller preview of any photograph that is not ready yet, sharpening as each one lands.

On Apple TV. Browse a chosen Photos album, then open Present to show it on the television. The remote advances or pauses the show. Apple TV receives synced ratings, verdicts and edits and does not change them. The grid shows each photograph’s local preview; a presentation shows the synced edit once Prepare has rendered it.

Left and right move one photograph, ⌘← and ⌘→ jump to either end, and nothing wraps: reaching the last photograph holds it. space starts and stops a timed advance. Press I for the count. Press , for the two settings — how long each photograph stays, and how long one dissolves into the next — which are remembered on this device. On a phone or an iPad a tap on either half of the photograph pages, a swipe pages, and three controls in the corner open the settings, start the timed advance and leave.

Nothing you press during a presentation changes anything. Ratings, verdicts, undo, delete and the mode keys are all refused while the show is up, so a guest leaning over the keyboard cannot mark your photographs. esc leaves, and the photograph you stopped on is the one selected in the view behind.
